Verolax is a laxative used for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation. Its active ingredient is glycerine, an osmotic laxative which induces evacuation of the bowels through a direct local stimulation of the intestinal mucosa. Glycerine allows a large amount of water to pass through the bowel, has a lubricating effect and causes the contraction of the intestinal muscles. Verolax also contains starch as well as mallow and chamomile extracts, which exert a softening and protective action. Verolax is available in adult and paediatric strengths.
